Sulin Casorzo 2014

As we draw toward the end of our search for Halloween wines,  it only seems appropriate to pick up Sulin Casorzo.  Over the past year, I’ve been getting wine from Wine Library as they have sales, or through their Wine Deals Instagram account.  As I have no control over what they pick to sell, this sometimes results in some odd bottle of wine finding it’s way into my collection.  It usually doesn’t fit anywhere in my schedule.

For example, a sweet Italian wine like Sulin Casorzo?  How about when covering the wines of New York? Nope, it’s Italian.   Ditto for France and Portugal.  How about Wine 103?  Nope, the varietal, Casorzo Malvasia is so uncommon it’ll be in Wine 1001.  So where to put it?  Well, Halloween of course!

See the general rule for dessert, is that the wine has to be at least as sweet as the dessert.  The reason for this, is if the wine is less sweet, the dessert shows it up, and makes your next sip of wine rather puckering or dry. Not a good combo!  So does an odd duck like Sulin Casorzo shine in this unlikely cameo role?

Sight:  A light orange edge compliments a ruby rose body with small fizzy bubbles.

Smell:   The nose is a deep mix of crushed violets and fresh roses, with notes of lavender, cherry, preserved raspberry.

Sip:   The body is like a dancer on the palate with a weightless energy, a touch of fizzy levity, and a bright welcoming nature.  Flavors blossom with rose, violet, fresh strawberries, and hints of candy cherry and balsamic drizzled cranberries.

Savor:  The finish is short, with a distinct balsamic laced strawberry and rose nature.  The slight sweetness lingers.

Sulin Casorzo 2014 is beautiful, elegant, and simple.   Similar to a Lambrusco, it has a fun, fizzy, vibrant nature.  The fruit and floral flavors are refined, yet simple and delicious.  The sweetness keeps it from being to overwhelmingly floral, and the fruity notes make it seem a little bit like soda [pop].  If you want something that should go marvelously with Twizzlers, Sulin Casorzo would be a phenomenal choice.

Verdict:  Roses, Violets, Strawberry, Candy Cherry
