Wagner Meritage 2012

Of all the holidays, I believe Thanksgiving is the one best suited to New York reds.  Lean, packed with fruit, and easy going weight, they represent one of the best choices to match up with turkey and all the trimmings.  While Wagner has demonstrated a beautiful reputation for doing white wine in the region (see this delicious riesling, which would also be nice at your Thanksgiving), they also make a handful of reds.  Top among them is Wagner Meritage, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet France, and Merlot that might be just the splurge for your Thanksgiving.

Sight:  An amethyst core with a touch of orange near the watery edge.

Smell:  Raspberries and currants come out with a hint of strawberries.  There’s a nice spicing layered in, with touches of plum and blackberries darkening things up.   A bit of spice and toasted oak add another level.

Sip:    The body is moderate-heavy, and has a good amount of brightness bouncing it around.  Notes of blackberries, raspberries, and espresso come together.  Cherries and currants begin to battle as the red fruit takes over throughout the duration on the palate.

Savor: The ending pulls in more of the cherry and tannins to drive it home.  The cherry notes are complimented with a hit of clove, pepper, and hint of  blackberry.

Wagner Meritage is a bit of splurge for your guests, but the structure is well balanced between bright red fruit and oak.  The effect is perfect with the spicing to help fit the Thanksgiving table.  With a nice amount of tannin, any sort of fattiness will play well here.  It also shows potential to continue to develop, and will unwind for the next few years, or if given some time to breathe prior to the celebration.  If you’re looking for a unique treat off the beaten path for your Thanksgiving guests, Wagner Meritage is a great choice.
