The Seven Deadly Zins 2012

This post of tasting notes and review of The Seven Deadly Zins is part of a collaborative series called “If you like…” with 10K Bottles.  Check out the full article over at 10K Bottles website to see how it compares to Murphy Goode Homefront Red and a field of other reds from California.

Sight:  A ruby red core with hints of brick and magenta at the edge.

Smell:  Black pepper, smoke, blackberries, and black plums are all entangled in a smokey, spicy nose. Touches of cherry, spice, and cigar box add a complexity to the nose.

Sip:  Full bodied and smooth, with just enough acidity to keep things lively.  The flavor profile is a nice mix of ripe dark plums, jammy blackberries, baking spices, vanilla, and smoky espresso.  Peaks of cherries, red currants, and mocha add another layer.

Savor:  The vanilla picks up here, and the tannins are noticeable, but not aggressive.  Black plums, cedar, and spice all round things out.

The Seven Deadly Zins is hedonistic and delicious.  The body is well crafted, and the flavors are punchy, vibrant, and cohesive.  The texture is also very good for the price point.  A good balance of fruit and oak persists throughout, helping this wine reach the next level.  Overall, The Seven Deadly Zins is a heavenly experience for those that like their red with a little bit of oak.

Verdict:  Blackberries, Smokey Espresso, Baking Spices, Ripe Plums
