KWV Cape Tawny

South Africa is known for producing bulk wines, and while this makes the wine cheaper, it can also be a double edged sword.  Cheap, lousy wine that isn’t enjoyable isn’t going to be more enjoyable because it costs less, but wine that’s good, and that’s a bargain is enjoyable more often.  Over the summer,  Jay and I professed our love for KWV’s Cape Ruby. No doubt that it’s a phenomenal ruby port of the cost, and certainly in the later category of bargain wines that are enjoyable more often as result of their price.  Can KWV Cape Tawny join it’s kin, or is it a bargain bust?

Sight:  It’s a brownish caramel like color.  It’s a little bit reddish, almost royally red.

Smell:  Caramel, brandy, nuts, toffee, and leather are all common.  There’s also a good amount of dried tobacco and cigar.

Sip:  It’s got a nice amount of sweetness, and a thick body thanks to the sugar and alcohol combination.  There’s a good amount of dried date flavor, as well a rather large amount of toffee, leather, and nuts.  There’s not a bad note of mocha either. [A.B.V. 17.5%]

Savor:  There’s a raisin / date figure, as well a nip of cigar.   It dissipates rather slowly thanks to the viscous nature.

Overall, KWV Cape Tawny isn’t the most complex tawny port out their, but under $10, it’s a darn steal.  While the ruby is much more solid and deep, the tawny is a good choice for those who would like a bit less fruit in their wine.  Additionally, since they tend to complement different desserts, and can stick around for several months, it’s worth buying one if each.  Worst comes to worst, hide one in the bedroom, and take nips of it during the cold winter months!

Verdict:  Color me tawny.
