How To Travel With Wine

One of the best parts of the holidays, aside form getting to spend time with family and friends, is the gifts.  If, however, you’re one of the many travelers that has to accept air travel as your holiday transportation method, it can leave you in a bind when it comes to how to travel with wine.  As the TSA won’t let you take it with you on the plane, you’ll need to check your bag, subjecting your wine to any number of rollercoaster rides in which you may receive a slightly different color, or at least more perfumed, wardrobe.  If only there were some way to protect both your wine and your clothes…

Voila! WineSkins are how to travel with wine easily and cheaply

WineSkin

Enter WineSkins, the wonderful product from 3M designed to keep your wine safe, and your clothes pristine.  Whether taking home a gift, or bringing the perfect bottle to party, for $20 for 8 WineSkins, you can seal up your wine in bubble wrap, and set aside your fears and worries of how to travel with wine this holiday season.

A few words of wisdom and caution when traveling with WineSkins:

  • You will want to pack your luggage so that it’s not bottle to bottle directly.  While the skins help, jolts from bottle to bottle can mean a WineSkin full of, well, wine.
  • Sealing the bottom corners is critical, so avoid any oversized bottles (this sadly includes most sparkling wine, like Champagne).  Some long bottles, like Gewurztraminer, also have trouble.
  • Putting 8 of them in your luggage can mean bad news bears as I learned on one trip, where two bottles smashed, potentially due to the weight of hitting against one another.  If you need to move a lot of wine, it’s probably better to buy specialized packaging like a moulded styrofoam box, or have it shipped to you.
  • Success Rate for me, has been 92% or 22 out of 24 bottles from locations ranging from New York to Utah to Australia.
  • Wine Skins do not protect against temperature or other environmental hazards.

If you need to pick up a set of WineSkins, Amazon has got them for $20 for 8.  They’re light and easy to pack just incase you get a holiday surprise or find something you want to take back.
