Cavit Pinot Grigio 2015

Finally leaving Piedmont, we’ll head over to Friuli-Venezia Giulia, where racy whites are the name of the game.

Friuli-Venezia Giulia

While Friuli-Venezia Giulia does, in fact, make some red wines, their original stars are crisp, energetic whites, that burst with flavor and acidity.  The main grapes you’ll see from Friuli-Venezia Giulia are:

  • Pinot Grigio – Does typical Pinot Grigio bore you to death?  Well, Friuli-Venezia Giulia makes some incredible ones are anything but ordinary.  These wines feature inviting aromas ranging from peach to almond to pear complemented with spicy earth.  To top it off?  They’re spring loaded with acidity.
  • Friulano – A local grape with a huge reputation.  The character here ranges from smokey to vanilla with points of spice, honey, mineral, and resinous character in between.
  • Sauvignon Blanc – Green, as usual, these are lean, spicy, and a touch on the smokier end.
  • Ribolla Gialla – Only grown in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, this grape produces fresh, floral wines with great citrus character.

Cavit Pinot Grigio 2015

Cavit is one of the most prominent producers of Pinot Grigio you can run across. It’s found literally everywhere, from gas stations to groceries to mega wine stores, but does Cavit Pinot Grigio make good enough marks to take your money?

Sight:  A pale golden color

Smell:  The nose is bright and light, channeling honeydew, cantaloupe, and hints of lime.  A slight degree of flowers is present along with additional citrus.

Sip:  The palate is light, bright, and a little on the pithy side.  Notes of lime and lemon pith both come in and are given primary reign.  Hints of cantaloupe vaguely hide in the background, and a little bit of orange blossom comes in.

Savor: The finish carries through the citrus and pith, being slightly bitter.

Cavit Pinot Grigio is ok, and not particularly strong in minerality or fruit character.  The bitter nature of this wine is not overtly pleasant, despite the approachable nose.  That said, the structure of the acidity is on point, so what it lacks in flavor, it pulls off in brightness.  While the price is alright, there are better options than Cavit Pinot Grigio.

Verdict: Lime Pith, Lemon, Cantaloupe, Bitter
